Foundations
Trenching is complete. Formwork is going in. Our concrete sub says it will be done today… which means tomorrow. Next step is for the rough-in plumbing, then the concrete sub will come back to install rebar and pour the footings/foundations.
We have opted for a raised foundation. Why do we like raised? Here are some of our reasons:
Better curb appeal with the steps up to the front porch
Softer floors. There is a definite difference between walking through a home with a raised foundation and one with slab on grade (essentially a concrete pad). The floors in a raised foundation stay warmer and have a slight amount of give which translates to a softer feel.
Ease of changes, maintenance, etc… I have no intention of crawling under the house, but my husband fits 😉
These are just a few of our reasons. Based on current construction prices it is essentially a wash (raised potentially running slightly more) in respect to cost.
Every contractor has an opinion and a preference when it comes to foundations. However, not all situations, lots, height restrictions, etc… are created equal. There will be cases when one type of foundation is the obvious choice. In others, it comes down to personal preference.
