A revival in traditional American agriculture is sweeping across the country and is regaining its hold on the produce industry: Farmers Markets. This is no coincidence as the American populace has begun to grow self-conscious of where their food comes from and how it is grown. On average, the American meal travels about 1500 miles to get from farm to table, forcing large scale grocery outlets to grow their produce with additives in order to keep their products “fresh”. Farmers Markets, on the other hand, offer produce directly from local farmers, growers, and producers. The short marketing channel from grower to consumer results in the produce to be grown free of additives and to be sold at their peak of freshness. Farmers Markets offer customers a unique outlet to communicate with their food suppliers that grocery stores can’t—after all, the grower is right in front of you. Other than having farm fresh produce, outdoor markets support the local economy because all the products you are buying are grown from families in your neighborhood. Corona Del Mar
Downtown Corona Del Mar (CDM) home to gourmet restaurants, savvy boutiques, and unknown to most, a cozy 25 vendor farmers market. Every Saturday morning starting at 9am farmers from 8 different local farms transform the corner of PCH and Marguerite Ave into a small neighborhood market. Bringing an array of different products including fresh caught fish, homemade guacamole, baked goods, and seasonal fruits and veggies. This small farmers market is cute and quaint just like downtown CDM and is the perfect place to grab fresh ingredients for an artisan meal.
Surf City Nights
Every Tuesday night Main Street in Huntington Beach turns into Orange County’s most vibrant farmers market. Starting at 5pm the city blocks off the surf city’s busiest street leaving it open for hungry city goers. The Surf City Nights is a clash between farmers market and street fair, containing over 90 vendors, dozens of street performers, a petting zoo, and mouth-watering street food. The fair is split up into two streets, Main Street and 5th Street. Main Street entails more of the street fair aspect with loads of craft goods to explore, and street performers to entertain you while you chow down on some of Orange County’s best street food. Located just one block over from Main Street is 5th Street where you can shop for farm fresh veggies, fruit, and homemade baked goods from local vendors. An added bonus to Surf City Nights farmers market are the endless options of bars, boutiques, and restaurants that stay open for guests. Surf City Nights is the best way to end a cool summer night.
Irvine Certified Market
With over 20 years of operation, the Irvine Certified Market is Orange County’s modern day version of a bazaar. Once located in the UCI plaza, the 100 plus vendor market has moved over to Mariners Church on the corner of Bonita Canyon and Turtle Ridge. Rain or shine, the Irvine Certified Market kicks off every Saturday morning at 8am providing local consumers with a multitude of farm fresh produce and made-from-scratch baked goods. Whether you’re there for groceries or to explore, head over to the food truck area to enjoy some live entertainment and made-to-order street food, it’s the best in town!
